HEYFIELD- has a population of around 1,600 with a reasonable shopping centre. It is a Timber Mill town situated on the Thomson River 200kms east of Melbourne (2.5hours travel) in a fertile farming area with some irrigation, an hour from the Mountains, Lakes & coast , this area has many National Parks. There are also Wineries dotted throughout Gippsland.

It was originally named by James McFarlane who, seeing a field of billowing corn, called it Hayfield.

Heyfield is well known for its timber mills, dairy and beef cattle farms and tourism. It is situated in a beautiful area as it has wonderful venues available such as the Snowy Mountains, Thomson Valley Mountain racing championships, Cowwarr Weir, Glenmaggie Weir, Licola, Pearsons Point, Walhalla, The Channels and the Pinnacle Tours.

Good Nordic skiing is available at Mt Tamboritha and Mt Skene and great bushing walking and trail rides are available during the summer months.

The Glenmaggie Weir not only provides water to the irrigation farmers at Denison and Nambrok but also provides great summer vacations for those interested in fishing, water skiing, power boats and yachting.

Heyfield is one of the very few towns that can boast a "real" sense of community which is being continually perpetuated by the sporting clubs of Heyfield.

Heyfield is situated half an hour from the cities of Sale & Traralgon, at the foot of the Great Dividing Range.

Sale is the home of one of Australias main RAAF Bases and the RAAF Roulettes aerobatic team. Traralgon is the located in the Latrobe Valley known for its brown coal open cut mines, & is the main source of Victorias electricity supply.
